This morning I had a doctors appointment and one of the first things the Doc said when he walked in was "So you passed your glucose test last week with flying colours but your blood test results were scary!". Ok. That isn't something you want to hear come out of your doctors mouth at any point in time. He went on to say "You are not just anemic - you are severely anemic." This statement, believe it or not, actually made me relax a little. It's no shock to me that I had a low red blood count - and I am sure it is no shock to my Mum who is probably reading this and breathing a sigh of relief too. It isn't the first time in my life we have been told I have Anemia. It is the first time however it has been classed as 'severe'. The doctor finished my appointment and then told me he had already sent off prescriptions to my local pharmacy and to go straight there and pick it up and begin treatment right away.
I went to Walgreens and picked up my prescriptions, came home, read his instructions and found out that this changed my usual pill taking routine dramatically. It meant taking an extra 12 tablets a day! 12! I texted Paul and told him I am literally going to rattle as I walk! So I snapped some pictures of exactly what I mean. The first photo is of the minimum number of pills I need to take each day with this pregnancy. if I need pain killers or a sleeping tablet I have to add that on top. The other is my bedside table draw. It made me laugh when I opened it this afternoon. You can definitely tell the draw belongs to a pregnant woman - one half is all my pills and the other - full of chocolate! In my opinion chocolate is just as crucial to my health as the pills are! : )
I have will have more blood taken at my next appointment and if the red blood count isn't up I will need weekly injections - so as much as I dislike taking so many pills each day I will do anything to avoid injections! Luckily the babies are doing great though and they are not affected by my Anemia. They were happily kicking each other and playing. They are getting enough iron - so it's only my health the doc is worried about at the moment. Fingers crossed for the coming weeks. Let the rattling begin!
