About four weeks ago Paul told me to take a pregnancy test. I was having really bad heart burn and he knew I normally only have heart burn when I am pregnant. I picked one up to put his mind at ease. I went to the bathroom to take it and left it on the counter while I went off to get some stuff done. I actually forgot to come back and check on it after three minutes because in my mind there was no way I was pregnant. I came back to the bathroom an hour later and to my absolute shock the test said positive! I immediately grabbed the phone and called Paul with the news. To make sure it wasn't a fault I took another one and checked it immediately instead of waiting this time. Sure enough - it too said I was pregnant! Ok... deep breaths!
Once we were over the initial shock of it we were pretty excited and got on the phone to let our Mums know the news. It was so early on that they were sworn to secrecy until we were a little further along. We told our immediate family a couple of weeks later. I have been so sick with this pregnancy. Constant nausea and throwing up. I have also been so tired and not sleeping well at all. This was such a shock for me as I wasn't sick a single time with either of the other kids. I wasn't used to feeling so horrid and was losing quite a bit of weight from not being able to keep anything down.
On Tuesday we had our first big pre-natal appointment at the hospital. This is where we met our OB and had all of my initial testing done. Blood, urine, pelvic exam and an ultra sound. It was also our chance to speak to the doctor about any concerns and basically discuss how everything was going so far. I explained to the doctor how I had been so sick and was losing weight and she was concerned. She explained it could be a number of reasons - including the altitude. I was used to being pregnant at sea level and the high altitude makes for a very different pregnancy. Well... when we had our ultra sound we found out just exactly why i have been so sick. Here is my play by play of the event:
Doctor: "Oh - that's why you are sick - there are two of them"
Bec: "I'm sorry.... what?!?"
Doctor: "You have two babies"
Bec: "hahaha very funny"
Doctor: "I'm not kidding - there are two babies in there"
Bec: "I wish I knew you better so I could tell if you were joking or not"
Doctor: Grabs my hand, squeezes it, looks me straight in the eye and says "I am not joking - you are having twins!"
Paul is standing at the time looking at the screen - All the colour drains from his face, he looks ill and slumps down in his chair and just sits there staring and looking like he might pass out. I of course take this opportunity to make jokes about how he looks sick and is freaking out and exclaimed "Oh - now we need to buy a bigger car"
Paul: Remains frozen in his game of musical statues and mumbles "please stop talking to me for a bit - I need a minute"
Bec - upon seeing Paul's reaction and realising this probably isn't a time for jokes, thinks about the news for a minute and then bursts into tears.
Paul: Suddenly pulling himself together (probably for my benefit more than him being ok) jumps up - comes over - takes me into his arms and says "we can do this... we can do this... we are strong... we have dealt with shocks and hardships before and got through it... you can do this... this is ok... we are gonna be ok"
Bec: Still crying - this time a little more hysterically.
Doctor: "This is a lot to take in - This is a normal reaction for people finding out they are having two babies. You have twice the level of hormones that a normal pregnant woman has to deal with so it's natural for you to be upset and worried. It doesn't mean you don't love or want these babies, you just have to get used to the idea. I'll give you guys a minute.
"Paul: Continues to be encouraging and strong.
Bec: Continues with her mass meltdown (which I might add lasted well into the night).
And so you have it...

And so begins our journey as the parents of not just one new addition.... but of two. Hang on tight people - I have a feeling this ride could get VERY bumpy! But hey... everyone loves extreme rides..... right? Be sure to tune in for the next episode of "I'm sorry... what?!?"
I'm so excited for you !!!
