Today Emma gave a presentation at school. It was her first oral presentation ever. They had to choose and research a famous person and then prepare a speech either dressed as the person and speaking in first person or creating a poster and speaking in third person. Emma decided she wanted to do someone from Australia. After looking at a few options she decided to do Steve Irwin - The crocodile hunter! Em didn't want to dress up as a boy and try talk like him so instead we asked if she could dress up as Bindi and give the presentation in character but speaking about her Dad. The teacher said it was a great idea so we set of to Hobby Lobby for supplies.
We found some crocodile skin paper that we used to create a border on her poster. We also grabbed some stickers and gems to fancy it up. We grabbed some iron on letters and an iron on crocodile as well as some army print material. This was to add to an outfit we had bought from Costco that looked a bit like a zoo keeper outfit. We added the words Bindi and Australia Zoo to her outfit and then added the crocodile. We made a belt out of the camouflage print material and added a pocket scarf. She looked super cute dressed up as Bindi.
Emma and I spent ages writing her speech and then typing it onto palm cards. She really got into the project and enjoyed reading books about Steve that we got from the local library and the internet. Once she had the information she wanted we turned it into a script for her to read. She was so cute and even came up with the suggestion of typing words that needed extra expression in capitals to remind her to say them enthusiastically. She practiced so much and mastered words that she originally couldn't even pronounce! I was so proud of how hard she worked at this.
We finished the project by printing her favourite steve pictures and making the poster. Em was really excited to present today but also a little nervous. She aced it though and came home with a perfect score 100/100! Her teacher was so impressed with her reading and presentation and loved her poster. Some of the kids got a little confused and actually thought that Steve Irwin was her real Dad. They came up and said "I can't believe your Dad is the crocodile hunter!" hahaha - The teacher had to explain to them that she was Bindi. They just got so excited by it and caught up in her accent! Too cute! Way to go Em! Your hard work and effort paid off!
