On Wednesday Hayden had his first soccer training for the season. He was super excited to meet his coach and team mates! We met at Draper Park where Chris (the coach) introduced himself and started teaching the kids the basics of the game. The each had their own ball and were taught how to kick, dribble, guard and throw in. They mixed the basic skills up with some games that utilised a particular skill. One of Hayden's favourite games was called 'Mud Monster'. The coach put a yellow players bib around his head and chased after the kids to try and steal their ball. If he got your ball you were out. If you or your ball went outside of the boundary while he was chasing you then you were also out. This was to help the kids learn to dribble while keeping the ball close to them for control. Hayden has a strong kick and always managed to get himself out while running from the 'mud monster'.
They then switched the game up so that if the monster touched you - you were frozen and had to stand with your feet apart yelling "help me, help me". Once a team mate kicked their ball through your legs you were free to run around again. It was so cute seeing these tiny children all squealing and yelling 'help me' at the top of their voices! They worked together as a team and did a good job. To finish the session they played a mini game - 4 on 4. Hayden did well - although at one point he almost scored an own goal because he forgot which way he was supposed to shoot! Hayden had a lot of fun at his first session and can't wait for his next one on Saturday. Hayden's first big game is Tuesday night! I am excited to see him in his uniform playing a real game!
